In 2022, Iowa experienced 237 opioid-related deaths, and fentanyl was involved in 89% of those cases. Even more concerning, deaths among individuals under age 25 increased by 160% between 2019 and 2022.
The state is also facing a rise in youth drug-related deaths, along with an increase in alcohol-related fatalities, particularly among older adults.
Despite these challenges, Iowa continues to work actively toward prevention, treatment access, and recovery support. The Iowa Office of Drug Control Policy oversees strategies and collaborates on initiatives related to prevention, treatment, and enforcement.
Community organizations also play a key role. The Iowa Alliance of Coalitions for Change (AC4C) supports coordination among local coalitions across the state, while Iowa Students for Tobacco Education and Prevention (ISTEP) empowers young people to advocate against tobacco use and educate their peers on its risks.
